Mental health reform in WA – factoring in the NDIS

Kate Bullow1

1Chief Allied Health Office, WA Department of Health

Abstract:

As seen nationally, Western Australian hospitals are currently experiencing increasing pressures on inpatient mental health services. Recent reviews show challenges in discharging mental health patients to the community, with a lack of appropriate services and accommodation. Despite the inclusion of psychosocial disability in the National Disability Insurance Scheme, accessing the support that patients require through the Scheme cannot be achieved within clinically appropriate timeframes for multiple reasons. As WA mental health system reform progresses towards contemporary models of care, how will the realities of the NDIS be incorporated?
